Google Maps Add Public Safety Alerts
As part of a larger crisis response project, Google Maps has today launched a Public Alerts Web page, showing the locations of weather, earthquakes, floods and other location-specific incidents. For example, today’s map shows flooding in northern Indiana and severe thunderstorm warning in Louisiana. In a blog posting, Public Alerts engineer Steve Hakusa says, “We’re learning as we go.” He does not say how quickly information from various federal government sources will be posted on the maps. A question-and-answer page says Google will expand the range of alert sources over time, including state and private sources. Google already provides a Common Alerting Protocol-based service to which local public safety agencies can subscribe, and transmit emergency or urgent information. View the Public Alerts map page.

“Now live, users who search for directions or a company in an area under any sort of watch or warning, an alert will appear on the left side of the screen above all results, noted with the orange epicenter symbol that is very easy to spot, offering “more information” with one click.
Google’s alert system links to whichever source is issuing the warning so that affected areas are shown alongside what precautions you should take. So far, Google offers warnings from the National Weather Service, US Geological Survey and US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. It is likely more services will be added over time.”

this could prove to be one of the better features they added to their bag of tools, i will definitely be watching a few key things on this service
1. type of data and how dynamic it is
2. how often the data is refreshed and how user driven it is
3. overall evolution
has real potential, more so anythingyting they have rolled out lately.
I like this new tool. I believe it will eliviate some family concerns durign regional occurances. People will be able to see the potnetial or actual damage and know not to call because they would only be cloggin up the hampered networks. OR to call and warn family members. Also goo dfor volunteers to know where they can assist or wehre to stay away from based upon the accuracy and timelyness of the mapping info..
This will likely turn out to be a great tool for people who travel, IMHO the key feature 1 it pulls from the three major agencies 2 being web content you can navigate to the site perform a query on a given area and then save the result as a “one-click” link in your favorites browser, works on mobile devices just as well. so people who travel can add multiple “one-click” links for specific areas that will refresh/update each time you click for a given area.
I have already added several links for the areas i will be traveling in the near future and have recommendedd my colleaguess do the same. Cheers!
